Visiting the Sick and Helping the Needy
“Spend oh Son of Adam and I shall spend on You.” Hadith Qudsi
The Prophet (s.a.w) said, “Give food to the hungry, pay a visit to the sick and set free the one in captivity” Sahih Bukhari
Our Vision: Promoting Islamic Health – Physically, Spiritually and Morally
With the growing number of Muslims in Minnesota – 200,000 - Muslims must play a role in helping health care organizations meet the special needs of this population. We must also embrace the responsibility of helping the less fortunate as enjoined upon us by the Quran and Sunnah. Recognizing the emphasis Islam places on charity and caring for others, this group applies Islamic knowledge and teachings in reaching out to the needy and sick in our community.
Our Goals: We seek to
- Create a network to provide spiritual support and companionship for Muslim and non-Muslim patients
- Build strong connections with local hospitals to visit Muslim patients
- Establish a sustainable system for financial assistance to help the less fortunate
- Build a support system for elderly individuals in the community
- Link the needy to available resources and useful social services.
Our Activities
Visiting the Sick - Visit Muslim patients at seven different hospitals in the Twin Cities Metro: Unity and Mercy Hospitals, Augustana, Fairview Southdale, Fairview Riverside, St Joseph, Regions and Hennepin County Medical Center
- Prepare and distribute “Muslim care packages” to patients, which include Islamic literature and information
- Connect with hospital administrators and chaplains to better understand the needs of the Muslim patients
- Provide training to volunteers on how to approach patients and conduct themselves in a hospital setting
- Organize Friday prayer services at Fairview Riverside hospital for Muslim workers and relatives of the patients.
Services to the sick are available upon direct request from the patient, hospital, social workers or any other healthcare professional.
Help seniors and the needy:
- Contact and help elderly people in the community with daily activities such as shopping, house-chores, transportation and financial assistance
- Provide emergency financial assistance to families in need
- Help needy families with other assistance such as food and transportation vouchers.
Food Shelf - Operate a food shelf once a month at Abu Bakr Saddique Center. Currently planning and working on opening other food shelves in other communities and mosques.
